NDMA to conduct survey for assessment of damages

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) would conduct assessment survey of flood hit areas through machine readable forms to compile a centralised data of house hold damages.

Official sources said on Thursday that talks are underway with donors agencies including Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank (WB) to discuss details of the project after which final decision would be taken.

Sources said that NDMA would execute this project with the cooperation of Pakistan Army under which damaged caused to housing units and private property of the flood affected areas would be estimated.

Sources added that results of the survey would be the focal point to assess the actual extent of damage caused to privately-owned houses.

Initial estimates suggest that some 1.8 million houses have been damaged and it is necessary to have accurate figures to pay the compensation amount.

Sources informed that engineers would assess the extent of damage suffered by the houses and with the cooperation of the armed forces, the major expenses incurred would be saved.

Floodwaters from Manchar Lake enters Sehwan airport

DADU: A breach in Manchhar Lake widened to 1200 feet after the Lake overflowed beyond its 121-foot capacity; while, the breaches in two others dykes broadened 1200 to 800 feet letting out massive torrents of water, Geo News reported Thursday.

Floodwaters also entered into Sehwan airport after breaches were made at RD-11 and RD-12.

The massive outflow from the Lake has devastated more than 100 villages and the crops of cotton and chilies with water rapidly heading towards Bhan Saeedabad, triggering the local people to evacuate.

According to Irrigation Department officials, the breach in RD-96 of Manchhar Lake’s protective embankment, widened to 1200 feet.

RD-95 suffered 800-foot breach and RD-97 got 1000-foot breach. DCO Jamshoro Sami Siddiqui issued to Bhan Saeedabad the emergency warnings for evacuation, adding a caravan of 100 buses has been dispatched to the city to help the citizens to relocate to safer places.

All the displaced people would be accommodated at the camps in Sehwan Matiari, Jamshoro, Kotri, Tando Muhammed Khan and Tando Allahyar.

The water gushing out from the breaches caused yesterday in RD-11 and 12, is roaring near Indus Highway.

Meantime, Brig. Zubair of Pak Army said Pakistan Army and Pak Navy decided to launch a joint operation in the flooded areas adjacent to the Lake, adding at least five helicopters and over 50 boats are being dispatched to these areas.

EU leaders agree to trade concessions for Pakistan

BRUSSELS: European leaders struck a "deal" in principle on Thursday to ditch or reduce tariffs on Pakistani export products, a senior diplomatic source revealed.

"There is a deal on Pakistan aid," the source said as European Union leaders, identifying a readiness among the 27 EU heads of government and state to offer trade favours to flood-ravaged Islamabad as it battles extremism.

The details, the source said, would be worked out in October when the European Commission would come up with proposals.

A separate source earlier indicated that leaders were considering a political statement of intent ahead of foreign ministers taking up the issue next month.

No transport facility has been arranged for people migrating off tehsil at government level, leaving them confined enough to evacuate their homes on their own, which is underway at a very slow pace.

DADU: Manchhar Lake burgeoned past extreme dangerous 121-foot level, posing massive threat to Bhan Saeedabad, Geo News reported Wednesday.

The outpouring lake water exposed over 250,000 population of Bhan Saeedabad area of Tehsil Sehwan at increased risk.

According to the Irrigation Department, the water from the Lake would be let out into Indus Link by causing a cut from RD-7 to 9. A decision in this regard has been made. The water would be unleashed from Karampur into Indus Link.

DCO Dadu Iqbal Memon is leading the crew to cause a breach with heavy machinery; however, the local people are not allowing him to carry forward with the cut.
